Sick mothers and grace
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Apr 03 2007, 11:47:02 AM EDT )
Did you see the
news report about the mother who was arrested while trying to sell her seven-year-old daughter for sex and porn? Sheriff Warren Evans reports that a 33-year-old mom of Troy, Michigan arranged to bring her child to a hotel where the little girl "would do just about anything that the man wanted her to do." The mother also said she was willing for her daughter to pose for pornographic pictures. She indicated that the little girl had been used in this way before.

Watch your mouth in '07
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Jan 02 2007, 12:34:39 PM EST )
As I pondered the events of 2006 earlier today strangely I remembered the ugly
speech to the U.N. of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. I'm talking about the address in September in which Chavez referred to President George W. Bush as "the devil." Bush spoke to the U.N. the day before and Chavez quipped that the place still smelled of sulfur from his visit.

Celebrating a Shocking Sacrifice
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Dec 18 2006, 01:30:45 PM EST )
Once upon a time the King came from the realms of glory to bring hope, peace, love, and joy to his subjects. He could not bring these through force, for hope, peace, love and joy are not experienced through coercion. The King had at his disposal great power, but it would not be helpful to him in his quest. So He did something shocking.

A Great Christmas Story Told Well
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Dec 08 2006, 11:15:51 AM EST )
The best screen adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" is the
1951 version starring Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge. This movie, sometimes found under its original English title, "Scrooge," is true to the original story. Surprisingly the 1951 version adds some blatant Christian components not found in Dickens' telling of the tale.[

Misunderstanding upon Misunderstanding
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Nov 30 2006, 01:08:29 PM EST )
There was misunderstanding upon misunderstanding.
The first misunderstanding came in 1877 when Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli looked through his telescope at the planet Mars and saw what appeared to be some straight line-like structures that he called "canali." This Italian word was probably mistranslated into English as "canals". The Italian word can mean canals, but it can also mean simply gullies. There were drawings by Shiaparelli and others showing the "canals” on Mars.

Responding to gays and lesbians
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Nov 16 2006, 04:05:25 PM EST )
According to my best understanding of the scriptures, sexual acts between persons of the same gender are sinful. I would like to be able to tell those in monogamous gay and lesbian relationships that homosexual sex is acceptable, but I cannot get there using the principles of biblical interpretation that I have learned. If someone out there can show me something I may have missed then I am willing to listen. But at this point I am forced to maintain the position that sexual acts between persons of the same gender are sinful. Yet, as quickly as I would declare the sinfulness of homosexual sex I would also declare a glaring problem in the way many evangelicals respond to gays and lesbians.

Hate, Loathe, and Despise
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Oct 30 2006, 11:53:08 AM EST )
I heard a Baptist preacher say gay people are hungry for the word of God "but they don't come to our churches because they think we hate them and loathe them and despise them." He went on to say, "The reason they think we hate them and loathe them and despise them is that we hate them and loathe them and despise them." I heard those lines in a sermon preached about 14 years ago, but if that's not a direct quote, then it is very close.

A repugnant, racist ad
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Oct 25 2006, 05:00:24 PM EDT )
In my experience as a Baptist pastor in the South the main fear at the heart of racism in the region is the fear of romantic relationships between Blacks and Whites, especially the fear of romantic relationships between Black men and a White women. Let me give you a couple of examples.

How to make God really mad
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Oct 07 2006, 08:54:28 PM EDT )
Do you know what the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was? Don't answer too quickly; you might be surprised. I had always heard that it was homosexual behavior that led to God's harsh judgment against those ancient cities. However, in
an article posted at ethicsdaily.com back in August, Miguel De La Torre taught me that the Bible mentions another sin more often than any sexual sin in connection with Sodom. This other sin that led God to rain burning sulfur on those people is far more prevalent in our culture than homosexual behavior.

Evangelicals and Southern Baptists were the worst
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Oct 05 2006, 10:22:56 AM EDT )
I was hunting for a statistic online when I stumbled upon something completely different that disturbed me. In an
interview at christianitytoday.com last year Ron Sider said, "A Gallup study discovered that when they asked the question, 'Do you object if a black neighbor moves in next door?' the least prejudiced were Catholics and non-evangelicals. The next group, in terms of prejudice, was mainline Protestants. Evangelicals and Southern Baptists were the worst."

When God Changes His Mind
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Aug 28 2006, 08:44:06 PM EDT )
"So the LORD changed His mind about the disaster He said He would bring on His people" (Exodus 32:14, HCSB).
Have you ever thought of the Lord changing his mind? According to the verse above, he did.

Reading in the Water
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Aug 22 2006, 12:13:11 PM EDT )
My family just returned from a few days at White Lake, North Carolina. It is a beautiful lake and we had a great time. There is a little bit of summer left and some of you may be planning trips to a lake or perhaps dips in a pool in your yard or elsewhere. If this is the case and if you happen to be an avid reader, then I have a few fips for reading in the water. [

A Baptist with a big heart for the hungry
Posted by 4whatitsworth ( Aug 19 2006, 07:36:19 PM EDT )
"I'll get all those fish today," he said, but he is not going fishing. Jim White stands in the meat department of the Food Lion Supermarket at Holden Beach, North Carolina waiting to see Wendel Davis, manager of the department. Motioning to a case containing packages of various fish fillets including Perch, Salmon, and Tilapia, he said, "I'll double wrap them so they won't make the freezers stink."
